In Khok Kloi there are ATMs, local restaurants, shops, convenience stores, and a nice long stretch of the pristine Natai beach.
If you would like to visit Khok Kloi town or Natai beach, we can drop you off and pick you up any time between 9 AM and 5 PM. Otherwise, we also can arrange a taxi for you to visit other areas.

Health and Safety Regulations

The following section has been prepared to help ensure that you remain safe at all times when volunteering at the STEF. You must read, understand, and comply with ALL health and safety regulations. Upon arrival, you will be required to sign a waiver stating that you fully understand and accept our health and safety regulations. If there is anything that you do not understand or would like clarifi cation on, please email or speak to our Volunteer Coordinator. In time, you may get to know many of the mahouts (elephant keepers) and the characteristics of the elephants. However, you must never become complacent around an elephant. We require you to comply with the following:

STEF Veterinarian Volunteers are required to hold their own travel insurance that extends to cover medical costs and activities connected with volunteering with elephants. You must also ensure that your vaccinations are up to date (which MUST include DTP and Rabies).

In compliance with Thai law, visiting veterinarians and other veterinary visitors will not be permitted to practice veterinary medicine. However, you may be allowed to perform some medical procedures or treatment on the elephants at the STEF Veterinary Centre at the discretion and through direct supervision of the STEF head vet.

All volunteers are required to conduct themselves with propriety and professionalism at all times. Volunteers must comply with all reasonable requests of the STEF management regarding duties, dress code, and attitude towards staff and other colleagues while volunteering at the STEF Veterinary Centre and while on mobile clinic visits. Breaches of these rules will result in the revocation of the agreement and expulsion from the premises without a refund. Showing up for work while intoxicated will result in an immediate termination of your volunteering session at the STEF Veterinary Centre.

You are REQUIRED to notify the STEF Volunteer Coordinator of ANY incident or accident that may occur during your time with us.

Pre-Departure Preparation

You are responsible for securing your flights and visa before you arrive in Thailand. If you are planning to join us and stay in Thailand for a total duration of less than 30 days, we suggest that you enter Thailand with a tourist visa through your closest Thai embassies or consulates.

However, there is also a list of countries with Visa Exemptions. The Visa Exemption rule allows tourists to enter Thailand without applying for a visa prior to arrival. Please check the closest Thai embassies or consulate website if you are exempt.

Passport or travel document with an expiry date of no less than 6 months

  • Visa application form
  • One (1) recent 4 x 6 cm. photograph for the visa application
  • Round-trip air ticket or e-ticket (paid in full)
  • Proof of financial means (10,000.00 Thai Baht per person/ 20,000.00 Thai Baht per family)
  • Proof of hotel or private accommodation booking
  • Vaccination Records (including COVID-19, if applicable)

Consular or Airport Immigration Officers may request additional documents at their discretion. It is advisable to allow enough time before travelling to submit your visa application as there is an influx of travellers applying, now that COVID travel restrictions are lifted.

The visa fee is typically around US $30.00 (or equivalent) per entry. The Tourist Visa fee is subject to change, it is recommended to contact the nearest Thai embassy or consulate before submitting your visa application or to obtain the most up-to-date information regarding visa fees and types.

We recommend that you discuss vaccinations and health concerns with your healthcare provider/local physician or travel medicine clinic to receive the most up-to-date vaccination and health advice before visiting Thailand.

Please keep in mind that you will be living in the tropical area of Thailand where the temperature can easily be as high as 35-38°C in the summer months (January-June). Mosquitos and other insects are common.

The mandatory vaccines that we expect all volunteers to have:

  • DTP (Diphtheria/Tetanus/Polio)
  • Rabies

Other vaccinations you should consider are:

  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid

Regarding Malaria, since the STEF Veterinary Centre is not located in a malaria-endemic area, it is not necessary to take any preventative medications. However, dengue fever is prevalent in our area, thus we advise all volunteers to bring along mosquito repellent spray to minimize insect and mosquito bites.
